The Chinese believe that the location of the garden, garden furniture, trees, materials and garden decorations should be designed based on the model of yin and yang and the flow of energy, to create a positive effect.

Arranging a harmonious garden landscape, following Feng Shui, will bring good luck and a feeling of relaxation and relief to the homeowner.

Mr. Dinh Quang Diep, Head of the Department of Landscape and Garden Engineering, Faculty of Environment and Resources, Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry, said that arranging the house according to modern Feng Shui theory helps people build a life in harmony with nature whether in urban or rural areas.

Theories in this field are influenced by Chinese culture. “Feng” means wind and its effects, weather conditions. “Thuy” means water, ponds, lakes, rivers, canals and their effects on the environment. Feng shui is the way to arrange everything around to create a harmonious living environment of “yin – yang, five elements”. Garden feng shui helps control the circulation of air so that the vitality in the garden is always harmonious and present in every corner of the garden.

Garden direction according to feng shui

Garden direction is determined as the main direction that the owner often enters the garden. Each garden direction attracts different energies. For the garden, the best direction according to Eastern feng shui is the South. The South is considered a lucky direction that brings a lot of positive energy, which will bring luck to the homeowner. If your front garden cannot be placed in the South direction because it affects the aesthetics, you should place a statue or image of a phoenix to attract this positive energy.

The West is considered the direction that brings bad energy to the garden. Therefore, you need to consider carefully if you choose this direction as the main direction for your garden. If you have a West garden that cannot be changed, you should leave this area quiet, do not walk around often, or make noise. If you choose plants, choose slow-growing plants.

The North-facing garden is also a rather slow and heavy direction. However, if the landscape is arranged appropriately, the North-facing garden attracts good energy to help promote the homeowner’s career. For this direction, you should build a small fish pond or fountain, fish tank… facing the front of the garden to bring good luck.

The East-facing garden also attracts good energy. In gardens facing the sunrise, you should plant plants that grow in clumps such as bamboo, to attract good energy, help connect and support family relationships.

Balance Yin and Yang Energy

The garden created in front of the house is considered a symbol of positive energy. Meanwhile, the backyard is a symbol of negative energy. A garden with positive energy often has a lot of sunlight, lush trees, and bright colors of flowers and leaves. On the contrary, a garden with negative energy is often shady and has a stagnant pond.

Balancing the negative and positive energies in each garden is extremely important. If there is too much positive energy, the soil is dry and hard, and there are many raised areas, then you should clean up the garden and plant more dense trees and dig more ponds. As for a garden with a lot of negative energy, you should light up the garden, fill in the pond, and remove the dense trees. A garden that balances both positive and negative energies is a cool, bright, and lush garden that brings a feeling of lightness when entering that space.

Garden gate

The garden gate should not be too wide because a wide gate will cause the air to come in and out too quickly, not gathering the air. Meanwhile, a gate that is too narrow will cause the air to be trapped and stuffy. Therefore, the gate should be made in moderation depending on the area of the garden to balance it appropriately. When making the gate, you should use the type of sparse bars to allow good air circulation. The homeowner should only use the type of closed-slat gate when there is a toxic air flow outside that needs to be blocked (for example, the front garden has a smelly sewer).

The material used to make the gate depends on the direction and destiny of the homeowner. For example, if the house is facing East, corresponding to the Wood element, the homeowner should use a wooden gate, painted in navy blue, black, or green. The house is facing West, corresponding to the Metal element, so it should use a metal gate in yellow, white, etc. The material and color of the gate also depends on the landscape, the arrangement must ensure harmony and balance.

The fence

The fence should not be designed too close to or higher than the house. Because according to the concept, this will create an imbalance in energy and direct negative energy into the house, which is not good for the family.
